Isabelle Huppert stars as a lonely and repressed music teacher in this French drama directed by Michael Haneke. Erika Kohut (Huppert) teaches piano at the Vienna Conservatory. She lives with her domineering mother (Annie Girardot) and harbours masochistic fantasies. When Walter Klemmer (Benoît Magimel), one of her new students, attempts to seduce her, Erika is startled at first but then agrees to the affair if it can be conducted on her own terms. What happens next however threatens to intensify her self-destructive urges.
