Heiress Rachel Verinder (Keeley Hawkes) is given a diamond for her eighteenth birthday by suitor Franklin Blake (Greg Wise). However, Rachel's mother Lady Julia (Patricia Hodge) realises that the diamond is The Moonstone, stolen from an Indian shrine by Rachel's uncle. When the diamond is stolen from Rachel's bedroom, Sergeant Cuff (Anthony Sher) is called in to investigate.
