Shetland and the Great War

Riddell, Linda K.2015
Books, Manuscripts
Based on the author's PHD thesis for the University of Edinburgh. Shetland had a high proportion of its population serving at sea in the Merchant Navy, fishing fleet and in the Royal Naval Reserve. This book looks at the experience of the people from Shetland and also the people in Shetland during and immediately after the Great War. A continual theme is of the profound influence on Shetland of its geographical location. Equally thoroughly treated is the extent to which people considered themselves as Shetlanders. Complemented by an extensive bibliography and a thorough index. An appendix lists and describes every Shetland war memorial for that period.

Notes:
The Great War was a major global event whose repercussions affected everyone who lived through it and are still being felt today but the involvement of the people of Shetland is much less well known than that in World War II. This book remedies that disparity and shows that the experience of Shetlanders was varied, having much in common with that of people in the UK and elsewhere but also features which were specific and unusual. It investigates various aspects of wartime life both at home as well as at the battlefronts, including the effects on the economy and social conditions, and examines the circumstances of different groups of people - men and women; civilians and servicemen; residents and visitors. The geographical location of Shetland had a profound effect on how the war was experienced and this is one of the key themes of the book. Another is how Shetlanders related the war to their local community as well as to themselves and their families; although the demands of King, Country and Empire were paramount, Shetland, the 'Old Rock', had meaning for them. Based on extensive research of original documents and a wide range of secondary historical analysis, this book provides an impressive synthesis of wide-ranging information and new insights into Shetland a hundred years ago.
