Divers have lived on earth for some 40 - 50 million years. They have held a fascination for mankind since ancient times, and have been revered for their haunting calls, vivid plumage and mystical diving behaviour. Today there are five species which are distributed across the world's northern lands, breeding from the 45th parallel to within 500 miles of the North Pole. They are strong but wary birds, finely suited to life in the water but ungainly on land.
