The author grew up in Sellafirth in Yell, before mains water, mains electricity or the Oil Industry. The first half of the book covers this period till he joined the Meterological Office in 1969. Thrity four years later, he took early retirement and the second half follows his life from 2003. Writing Shetland's successful application for European geopark status led him to run his own tour guiding company Shetland Geotours for twelve years.
