Learn the island peoples' story from the Neolithic to the present day and the unique way of life which has evolved and adapted to changing economic and social necessities. The story includes the iniquities of the local lairds including the banishment in 1868 of the author's great-grandfather from the island for smuggling a cow across to Nesting for a family which had been evicted from the island by the laird for failing to pay their rent. You can find out how a woman laid a curse on the laird vowing that the day would come when there would be no Bruces left on island, that their mansion would lie derelict and children would play in the courtyards. And discover how that did indeed come to pass. The author now splits his time between New Zealand and Whalsay but his love for his homeland and its people comes through on every page.
