Shetland...the most northerly part of wild Britain. Here curlew and whimbrel call across windswept moorland as they did while the broch-builders raised their stone towers two thousand years ago. Here otters watch from the shoreline as they did when the longships of the northmen first came west over the sea. On the high cliffs and the heather hills, on the stacks and skerries, and in the surrounding seas, a world of wildlife awaits the seeing eye. For a whole generation of birdwatchers, Shetland meant the seeing eye of Bobby Tulloch. Bobby Tulloch was born in 1929 on the island of Yell, where he lived his whole life. He was the RSPB's man in Shetland for many years, exultant when the snowy owl came to breed on Fetlar in 1975; cautious and concerned when the oil industry arrived at Sullom Voe. In this book, beautifully narrated by his niece Caroline Keith, Bobby shares with his readers the wild Shetland he has watched since childhood, always discovering something new with each unfolding of the seasons.
