Finding and looking at rocks helps our landscape to tell its story. Take bairns for a walk on any Shetland beach and out of a million pebbles they will pick one up and those questions will follow. Such a randomly selected pebble may be exotic, or it may just look like one of its neighbours. The far travelled pebble in the bairn's hand will have a story to tell. It will be like a page fragment torn from a log of a journey written in stone. It will help to tell of fantastic voyage that 'Shetland' began far back in mists of geological time when our oldest rocks were somewhere near the South Pole. In this book we have attempted to bring together the pages and chapters of our 'stone log' together.
