Rithy Pauh directs this adaptation of the Margeurite Duras novel. Set in early 1930s Cambodia amidst the first intimations of the coming revolution, the film tells the story of an impoverished widow and long-term expatriate (Isabelle Huppert) whose identity is shaken to the core when her teenage children make a break for independence and colonial bureaucrats threaten to take back her paddy fields.
