Set in 1943 Charles Whiting's story describes how Lieutenant Crooke led a suicide mission to penetrate the 9000 feet high Monte Corno where the deposed Mussolini was being held. His mission was to plant false evidence in the fortress with a view to incriminating the head of the Nazi secret service.
